How to use it

A public-data time machine for Aotearoa

Pick a topic, drag the year slider, then click a region for the local rank, national average, land area, and change since 2000. Annual values are interpolated between public reporting points so the slider feels natural; the source pathway shows which official datasets should replace each seed layer as the live parsers mature.

Forestry

Trees, harvest cycles, and land-use change

The Forestry tab is the first pass at this layer. This section lays out the public datasets that can turn it from seed values into a proper time series for planted production forest, native forest cover, harvest pressure, wood processing, and farm-to-forest conversion.

Planted forest estate 1.79m ha

MPI reports New Zealand's planted production forest area as at April 2024.

Dominant species 91%

Radiata pine share of the planted production forest estate.

Harvested timber 32.7m m3

Estimated timber harvested in 2024, useful for harvest-cycle pressure.

Production forest

MPI NEFD

Annual planted-forest estate tables covering area, age class, species, planting, harvesting, and regional wood supply.

Forest data
Satellite land cover

LCDB

Satellite-derived land-cover snapshots for forest, pasture, built-up areas, wetlands, scrub, and other classes.

Land Cover Database
Processing pressure

Wood processing

Roundwood removals, sawn timber, panels, pulp, paper, stocks, and regional processing estimates.

Next build

Join NEFD regional tables to LCDB forest classes, then add harvest/removal indicators for context on whether tree cover is mature, expanding, or being cut.

Radio

Broadcast locations and live streams

Click a station to jump to its broadcast context and play the resolved public stream. RNZ services include official frequency and technical notes; commercial and community streams are discovered from public radio directories, including Radio Garden-style station discovery and Radio Browser metadata, then resolved to station/provider feeds.
